The “Captain and Coach” initiative is a project that successfully utilizes sport to raise awareness of family planning rights, and increase the use of birth control methods while eliminating barriers to access quality services. Knowledge about these issues and misconceptions around HIV/AIDS as well as addressing social taboo topics like prostitution is increased. We focus on this because restricted social and familial environments’ limiting the autonomy of women is a big challenge in the communities where we operate.
Sport is an ideal opportunity for a “Captain” to meet the target audience and other members of the community. These sporting events u sually help “Captains” to motivate young people and aids “Captains” as they seek to attract an audience.
Without knowledge of reproductive health matters, family planning users are not positioned to defend their rights, and providers are equally not prepared to comply with their obligations under the law. Innovative interventions like this are needed so that these two groups could be convinced to work with each other to reach the shared goal of increasing access to modern methods of family planning.
