More about Taking control – linking young Kenyans to HIV services with football
Kenya has the 4th largest HIV epidemic in the world, with over 1.6m people living with the virus and 62,000 new infections each week. One of the biggest obstacles to reducing new infections is engaging young men with clinical health services.
TackleAfrica has trained and is supporting 40 coaches from our partner MYSA to deliver weekly football coaching sessions in Mathare slum with inbuilt health messages, and provide mobile youth friendly access to HIV services pitchside at sessions and tournaments. So far 1800 young people have attended sessions, 1500 have accessed pitchside HIV testing and counselling, and 450 have opted for voluntary medical male circumcision, which can reduce the chance of HIV infection by 60%.
