More about YFC Rurka Kalan
YFC programmes address girls belonging to the lowest caste groups with problems likegender discrimination including female foeticide, low literacy rate, rampant social ostracism and low incomes. Gender based violence is almost acceptable. Travelling long distance for education or work is not permitted. Girls have low self-esteem and aspiration. Many drop outs from school early.Menstrual hygiene practices are primitive. Coming from low castes means constant exclusion for social settings. Few girls come out and are able to stake claim to any space outside of their homes. There is complete absence of role models in their lives. Sport is used in two ways at YFC. Firstly it acts as a hook to ensure participation and inclusion. Secondly it is used as a tool for experiential learning for bringing about changes in certain behaviours and practices. Children come to participate in sports sessions for fun and enjoyment. Every session of play is designed to give positive experiences ending with a reflection exercise drawing attention to a social message woven into the session. Mentoring and role modelling form a very important component of the experience.
