More about Skills4Life Employability Initiative
South Africa’s youth unemployment rate is 54.5%, four times higher than the global average. Unemployment is 3-4 times higher among non-whites than among the White minority. That 90% of White workers have at least graduated from high school compared to less than 50% of non-white workers, means even among the employed a severe economic imbalance persists. Sport is a language that transcends demographics, uniting youth across South Africa’s fractured society. After engaging young women and men through their interest in sport, Skills4Life takes a relationship-based approach to tackling unemployment and economic exclusion. In communities where many youth believe they will never be employed, Skills4Life delivers tangible results by providing job skill training, personal mentoring, and practical learning opportunities, as well as creating temporary jobs and pathways to permanent employment.
