More about Mathare Youth Sports Association
Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) is sports for development organization which uses sports to tackle social issues on quality education, health, lack of life skills and unemployment. MYSA has registration of 29926 soccer players and it is only through being registered as a team player or a coach that they qualify to participate in the MYSA employability trainings, leadership awards and for the libraries to be established in the area.
MYSA operates in Mathare and its environs. Mathare slum is a collection of slums in Nairobi Kenya with a population of approximately 500,000 people and 80% of the population consists of youth. Majority of the youth are either unemployed or underemployed. The high rate of unemployment pushes the young people to engage into criminal acts and prostitution.
Access to education or literacy services is a major challenge to the children and youth of Mathare slums. This is as a result of other competing needs for survival. Parents also have to bear with other costs to ensure their children have scholastic materials.
Due to the various challenges, the youth fail to get minimal education requirement to qualify for additional training or entry level jobs.
