More about Reclaim Childhood Summer Leadership and Sports Camps

Girls living in the Middle East have few opportunities to play sports and Reclaim Childhood aims to extend the benefits of sports to those who need it most: Iraqi refugees. RC will offer its third summer of sports camps in 2010, operating in four different refugee camps for four one-week sessions. The emphasis all day will be on fun and team building.

Staffed by female American collegiate athletes and local high school female student-athletes as translators, campers will participate and compete in soccer, basketball and volleyball. The Iraqi refugee crisis has displaced over 2.5 million Iraqis abroad in the last three decades and since the 2003 U.S. invasion, 500,000 refugees have fled to Jordan. Due to limited resources, the girls of refugee families do not typically receive the same support as their brothers making education and childhood fun rarities in the lives of young Iraqi girls.

Sport has the power to instill confidence, hope and ambition in its participants and team-oriented games at all levels provide the support necessary to improve self-esteem, strengthen peer relationships and foster leadership. By introducing Iraqi girls to sports, girls can begin to see themselves as real competitors – on and off the field.
