More about Pura Vida Skateboarding
Children who are dedicated to Skateboarding or other sports don’t get often involved in criminal activities because they define through sport their own aims in live and thus growing up to self-determined people – according to this our main mission is reflected in the slogan “Skate to live”. Our project is addressed to children and young people in poor and difficult social conditions who are characterized by drug abuse, a rising crime rate as well as a rising rate of school dropouts. A lack of leisure activities is leading the children into a life on the street and thus there is a great risk for them to slide into a loop of drug abuse and crime. In cooperation with the local NGO “Vida Nueva” we identified “the lack of leisure activities” as the crucial cause of many social and criminal problems of the children in San Isidro de El General, Costa Rica. Therefore we are using Skateboarding, among other things, as a tool which has an identify-establishing function and enables a meaningful leisure activity.
