More about PSD’s Community Sports Program
The Community Sports Program (CSP) operates within slum settlements in the city of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, in Eastern India, as children from these communities come from marginalized and underprivileged backgrounds, lacking in their social and emotional development due to inadequacies in their educational structure. They lack opportunities for extra-curricular activities that can help in their soft skills and personality development, and have minimal access to sport. Moreover, they grow up in rigidly-defined gender roles that restrict their life choices and potential, especially those of girls. The CSP uses sport and physical activity to catalyse the social and emotional development of these children, improving their physical and mental well-being, promoting gender equality and questioning gender stereotypes. CSP utilizes a specially designed, age-appropriate curriculum, delivered within the school’s playgrounds, which are transformed into multi-sport arenas. The curriculum ensures equal participation of girls and boys together in all its activities, and uses games to help the children become active, engaged and aware young leaders to work towards the betterment of their community.
