More about Promoting Sustainable Development in the Indian Himalayas Through Ice Hockey
During the harsh Himalayan winter, the bustling towns of Leh and Shimla used to be get relatively quiet, but that trend is reversing due to the growth of ice hockey in each respective community. Shimla has an old, storied history of British-ruled India. It's also where ice hockey was introduced to the country, and in the over 100 years since its introduction, there's only been the same one rink to skate on, and the season gets shorter every year due to climate change. Further up the Himalayas in Leh, hockey has grown dramatically over the past decade, in no small part due to the more favorable climate and support of organizations like The Hockey Foundation, but they're hitting a plateau without a dedicated facility. Both communities are distinct, culturally, religiously, economically, and we are supporting their development on and off the ice to help create an economy around ice hockey and provide truly life-changing opportunities that never before existed in India.
