More about Promoting Education & Literacy In India Through Ice Hockey
The remote regions of the Indian Himalayas have a history of poverty. As a result, children must often work to support the family and are unable to attend school on a regular basis. This is especially true for female children. In addition, a lack of educational tools and resources limit the impact of local teachers on students who can attend school. In order to support educational and employment development, The Hockey Foundation has donated hundreds of English books and conducted training that supports English literacy of all children, both male and female, in the region. English literacy is critical for future employment for these children and the future prosperity of the their families and the region. The growth of literacy in the region has also coincided with the growth of employment opportunities through tourism. This is especially true during the harsh winter months that had traditionally lacked any tourism but is now seeing economic growth.
