More about PCR Middle School Rowing
Evidence confirms that by providing children with the opportunity to develop positive behaviors through sports participation, the youth crime rate will decrease. Investing in sport activities for “at-risk” youth significantly minimizes personal harm to youth and adults, and maximizes social development among young people. Philadelphia’s High School graduation rate is 63%. In addition, the School District is closing 40 schools. Due to these cutbacks most middle school sports and physical education programs have been cut. Early engagement by “at-risk” youth will likely increase their continued participation and eventual graduation.
Additionally, childhood obesity is becoming an epidemic. A growing number of intervention studies provide evidence that intentional efforts during out-of- school time can improve the eating environment and increase physical activity opportunities for youth. thus, PCR feels our practice intensity and duration are key components to helping combat childhood obesity.
According to USA Swimming, 70% of African Americans and 60% of Hispanic children cannot swim and African American children are three times more likely to drown than their Caucasian peers.
