More about Pacific Sports Partnerships (PSP)

The Pacific Sports Partnerships addresses primary risk factors associated with non-communicable diseases, particularly physical inactivity, and inequalities experienced by women, girls and people living with disability.

In the Pacific, 75% of all adult deaths are caused by Non Communicable Diseases(WHO). PSP specifically targets programs to mothers and women not currently engaged in physical activity, people with a disability and young people.

90% of all participants involved in PSP activities are of primary school age as it has been suggested that physically active young people more readily adopt other healthy behaviours(WHO).

Women and girls are traditionally excluded from sports but 49% of PSP participants are female. Additionally, women are being elected to governance boards and opportunities for female volunteers, coaches & administrators are being fostered.

Increasing opportunities for children with disabilities to participate in sport are changing community attitudes which has been a major focus for PSP. Similarly, Adults with disabilities reported increased respect and support from their communities as a result of their participation in PSP.
