More about One Netball Pacific- Tonga
Women in Tonga are considerably more sedentary than men, largely due to traditional gender roles and sport programs often being dominated by men. The following barriers to women’s participation were identified through community consultations outlined above, including:
- Opportunities to participate in sport are de-signed for, and dominated by boys and men.
- Traditional gender roles constrain women’s participation in sport, particularly mothers.
- Community perception that after work, married women should be at home with their families and children or involved in activities for the church.
- Sport is viewed as self-indulgent.
- Negative perceptions of the ‘skimpy’ uniforms.
- Socioeconomic determinants and need to de-rive income from laborious and largely passive working activities such as weaving.
Women used to play traditional Tongan netball once a year, but through One Netball Pacific, TNA now offers a range of appropriate participation opportunities year round (detailed below). Programs target these barriers to engage as many women and girls as possible right across the country– from urban areas in Nuku’alofa, to rural areas of Tongatapu and outer islands.
