More about Northeast Kids
The communities of Taita, Pomare and Stokes Valley face some of the harshest socio-economic conditions in our country. Frequently over-represented in adverse poverty, population health, and crime statistics, students in these communities face a range of distractions to their education. Given that our community respond strongly to sport, the educational aspect of our project was borne out of a desire shared by council and local educators to use sport to provide more compelling and relevant class content, which would support their efforts to create more immediately engaging content and subsequently, create a brighter future for local students.
Difficulty engaging students as they progress through their school journey has been widely discussed across the cluster over many years, and this project was borne of a hunger to present an opportunity where a new cohort of students could thrive and achieve. The project was developed by Hutt City Council in 2014 in close collaboration with local educators and Sport NZ as our major funding partner.
