More about New Heights: College Bound
New Heights believes that one’s zip code should not be indicative of potential or abilities. Our core program, College Bound, addresses generational poverty by using a combination of intensive academic support, competitive basketball programming and life skills development to help youth realize their potential on the court, in the classroom and in the community.
The neighborhoods we serve contain high concentrations of low income, low educational attainment and high crime rates. What's more, NYC has one of the lowest HS graduation rates, ranking in the bottom 30% in the US. As our enrollment reflects our community--88% minority--we are highly attuned to the opportunity gap that exists on both a national and local level. In NYC, only 65% of black and Latino students graduated on-time last year, as opposed to 88% of their white counterparts.
Basketball is the sport of choice in our neighborhood and is a strong hook to attract youth to our program. Albeit it's the relationships gained and the level of support provided that keeps them engaged. Since 2005, NH has maintained a 100% high school graduation rate, a 98% college matriculation rate and 78% college graduation rate.
