More about Moving The Goalposts (MTG)
Kilifi is one of the poorest districts in Kenya with 60% of the population living in poverty. Girls between the ages of 15 and 24 years are being marginalized because of the limited social, economic and academic opportunities available to them.
They are also twice as likely to become infected with HIV as boys in the same age bracket. The project encourages girls’ participation in football and the organization’s activities by registering them in teams, organizing leagues and tournaments, providing peer health education, training opportunities and empowering them to become economically independent by promoting savings.
The girls build their own skills: they organize and manage all MTG matches, tournaments and leagues; they train fellow girls in coaching, refereeing and on first aid; they lead peer education and counseling sessions and give a detailed report on their activities. They represent the organization in local, national and international meetings. These activities help girls to make informed choices to live fulfilling lives.
