More about MoreSports/YELL
MoreSports/Yell is a collaborative partnership initiative started in 2002 in one hub - 3 inner city low-income neighbourhoods. In 2009 it involves 7 hubs including 17 Vancouver neighbourhoods, multiple partners and thousands of kids participating regularly in sport and physical activities. MoreSports reduces traditional barriers to sport including cost, transportation, cultural and language issues, lack of relevant programs, lack of supports needed by excluded children, and lack of trained community leadership through shared resource management, collaborative planning and development at a neighbourhood/Hub and City level. Key Hub Focus areas are: Community Capacity Building
- Neighbourhood Outreach, Engagement
- Parent, Youth Volunteer Recruitment and Training Youth Leadership (YELL or Youth Engage Learn Lead)
- Integration of existing school based leadership programs into hub sport systems
- Recruitment, training youth to be community based leaders & coaches of younger kids Infrastructure
- Create core partnerships between major social agencies – i.e. parks board, school board
- Partnership identification, integration of many partners in local hubs Sport Development
- Create sustainable local sport delivery systems that are largely volunteer based but tied to the recreation system
- Increase awareness of programs & opportunities for involvement
- Teaching kids skills that foster successful life choices
