Under their overarching “PLAY BALL” initiative, Major League Baseball is focusing on enriching communities across the United States and Canada, using baseball as a catalyst to further youth development. Underserved and underrepresented communities are home to programs such as the Urban Youth Academy (UYA), Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI), and the Breakthrough Series. In partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and USA Baseball, Major League Baseball targets not only physical involvement but also academic achievement, mentorship, and professional development.
Major League Baseball seeks to improve youth development in inner cities while instilling interest in baseball. Commissioner Rob Manfred has prioritized youth development, which has included trips to various sites around the country including Syracuse, NY with the city’s mayor, Stephanie Miner. In Syracuse, Commissioner Manfred and Mayor Minor provided the opportunity for 250 school-aged children to participate in baseball activities, with the goal of exposing them to the sport and getting the kids active.
