Traditional gender roles in Malta are hampering women from closing the gender gap. The rate of female participation in sport is alarmingly low. Over 44% of women are inactive in the workforce which ranks Malta second amongst European Union member states for the highest number of economically inactive women*. The statistics for the island of Gozo are dramatically worse than those for Malta.
The Ghajnsielem Redcoats have developed very successful and highly popular multi-sports programs for children from 4 to 11 years old. The club has basketball, baseball and softball programs for children and youths 6 years and older. The level of coaching of these programs improved as a result of IGETS and enrolments increased by 27% among boys and 36% among girls during the first 16 months since the start of the implementation of IGETS.
