We provided an opportunity for local children to interact through a comprehensive soccer league. This provided an opportunity for children to talk about their experiences and begin the healing process through play and teamwork. A total of 108 teams registered for the soccer league, and more than 2200 children and their teachers attended the league, staying on even after they had lost, to share their stories and receive peer support.
Children were involved in a 4000 tree-planting campaign together with the local community and the politicians during the rains in May and June. This activity formed part of the Million Tree Campaign of UNEP. We trained 24 youth as volunteer soccer teachers and counsellors to work regularly with 42 schools involved from April to November 2009. We also provided a daily ration of flour to the worst hit areas throughout that period.
