In underprivileged regions of the world children that don’t have any type of sports equipment available to them or opportunities to participate in sports programs often use those countless hours of free time to engage in unhealthy and unproductive activities, such as abusing drugs and alcohol or taking part in unsafe sexual activities that puts them at increased risk of contracting HIV, AIDS and other transmitted diseases. When children have sports equipment readily accessible to them they are more likely to fill those voids in their daily life with healthy physical activity. Sports equipment and the opportunity to use it has the amazing ability to unify children, encourage social interaction, forge friendships, foster a love of sports and promote a true appreciation for physical activity, among so many other wonderful traits.
We’ve seen the results firsthand of what sports equipment means to those children who have nothing to look forward to in their lives, as when equipment is delivered to children in AIDS-ravaged regions of Africa, for example. Within minutes of receiving the equipment they choose teams and quickly begin playing and interacting with one another in a healthy endeavor – one that adds immense value to their life.
