More about Glasgow Sport Coach Core
Tackling the high levels of unemployment within Glasgow continues to be one of the main challenges facing the city. Glasgow’s unemployment rate stands at 11.3% of the working age population, compared to a Scottish average of 7.8% and a UK average of 7.7% with youth unemployment figures also higher than those for the overall population. Glasgow Sport’s Coach Core apprenticeship is a full-time, year-long leadership and employability programme that focuses predominantly on unemployed young people aged 16 – 23 year olds and living in the deprived areas of Glasgow afflicted by antisocial behaviour and crime. Coach Core is in a unique position in that we intervene on a number of levels from initial engagement, particularly with those who are furthest from the job market. Coach Core improves participants’ self-esteem, personal wellbeing and skills development by training them as sports coaches, promoting progressions into employment and life-long active citizenship. Not only has Coach Core impacted on all participants but with an additional workforce of 20 sport coaches in the city every year, there has been a wider impact in terms of the capacity and performance of our community sports.
