Girls and women in Mali face particularly difficult challenges, with blatant gender inequality manifested in low girls’ school enrolment and retention rates, early marriages, high maternal mortality rates, and traditional practices that notably increase women’s vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, including polygamy, levirate marriage, and female genital mutilation. In this context, Right To Play has contributed to the breakdown of gender roles and stereotypes through the creation of all-girls sports teams in Mali, and increased the confidence, leadership skills and self-esteem of girls impacted by the project through training in our Youth as Leader module.
This project falls under the umbrella of our Play to Learn program in Mali, which includes over 39,294 children, 644 coaches, and involves 192 educational institutions, and aims to promote a holistic approach to child and youth education, as well as the UN concept of Sport for Development and Peace.
