More about Giovanni Van Bronckhorst Foundation
The Giovanni Van Bronkhorst Foundation operates in regions with high illiteracy, unemployment and social exclusion. A key driver of these social problems is poor school attendance and educational performance. We use sport to support children transitioning from primary to secondary school, a crucial drop-off point in their educational trajectory. We focus on children who have fallen behind through learning difficulties, behavioural problems, family trauma or special educational needs. Through our fun, sports- and education-based programmes, we help children develop core life skills to overcome personal and societal barriers, and improve their educational and career prospects.
Our programme, based on professional football coaching methodology developed by Giovanni and his team, translates learning opportunities and techniques gained through sports participation into core skills including literacy and numeracy, and coping strategies that serve children long into the future: building self-esteem, self-reliance and resilience; planning for success; and dealing with setbacks. Our programmes help children to overcome structural disadvantage and fulfil their potential.
