More about Getting Ready for the Games and Beyond
London Youth is a vibrant network of over 400 youth organisations, serving 75,000 young people. Getting Ready for the Games and Beyond is a capacity-building sports programme designed to harness the potential of community-based youth clubs across London to increase the scope and volume of sports offered to young people and thereby increase habitual participation in sport amongst young Londoners - beyond talent, the school gate and traditional boundaries.
We are working with 60 youth clubs in East and Central London, initially for 3 years. The aim is to give young people the opportunity to take part in sport no matter what their previous experience or ability. This is done through a carefully staged development plan:
- Taster sessions in 9 sports (Athletics / Basketball / Football / Indoor Rowing / Non contact Boxing / Parkour / Street Dance / Table Tennis / Tape Ball Cricket)
- Sports coaching course for youth workers / young leaders / volunteers
- Sports Leaders Tutor training
- Sports resource / coaching packs
- Sports equipment provided
- Volunteer placement
- Local and sub-regional competitions
• Support from sub-regional Sports Development officer We have an advisory board of partners, whom we work with on the project including London Community Sports Network Sports Action Zone, London Active Communities, London coaching Foundation, Sports Leaders UK, Leyton Orient in the Community, National Governing Bodies of above sports and Pro-Active partnerships.
It is our aim to eventually run the project throughout all 33 boroughs across London, working with 150 clubs. We are also working closely with Clubs for Young People, a National Organisation working with Youth Clubs to look at taking the project in to other Regions.
