More about GameChangers Challenge for Collaboration

Despite accounting for 51% of the world’s population, studies show that youth are often underrepresented in their national parliaments and their community’s policy-making discussions. Studies also show that levels of youth demonstrate low levels of civic engagement and proficiency in the US and the MENA region. Active youth representation and engagement are vital to the promotion of inclusive and peaceful societies (Goal 16) and greater gender equality (Goal 5).

Research indicates that youth who are involved in sports plus prosocial activities, (such as volunteering with civic associations), demonstrate higher levels of connection and compassion than youth who are not involved involved in sports as well as youth who are involved in sports alone. Furthermore, studies also show that young girls who are involved in sports demonstrate greater levels of involvement in the affairs of their communities.

In order to increase the civic engagement of youth and girls, the GCCC Partnership uses sports to 1.) increase youth civic skills (critical thinking, conflict resolution, consensus-building, intergroup communication); increase 2.) youth civic attitudes (empathy, responsibility, desire
