More about Free to Run - Running for Equality
Free to Run in Afghanistan provides running, hiking and outdoor adventure programs to empower and educate females who have been affected by war and conflict. Afghanistan is one of the most challenging places in the world to be a woman. Despite significant advances that have been made since the fall of the Taliban in 2001, the country frequently ranks amongst the lowest in terms of educational opportunities, life expectancy, health, and access to justice. As the security situation continues to deteriorate, it’s critical that we support women and girls in Afghanistan, and provide them with opportunities for empowerment and education.
Free to Run’s model is to first create a safe and supportive environment where women and girls can participate in sports. To do this we work with communities, teachers, parents, authorities and elders. Second, we promote equality through sports by supporting activities for women and girls outside of the home, in and with communities. We also incorporate mixed gender activities wherever possible. Third, we provide learning opportunities by using sport to promote self-confidence, resilience, life skills.
