More about Football United
Football United aims to build capacity of communities, and improve the skills of people, in diverse and disadvantaged areas that include high proportions of refugee, migrant and indigenous children, youths and families. Football United achieves this by creating sustainable programs that are underpinned by leadership development, empowering youths and young adults to become coaches and managers of weekly football programs.
Football United’s experience and expertise in implementing a sustainable, and alternative model of football for social development means that it is well placed to play a part in addressing these wider issues of exclusion. Football United uses social and community building, partnership-based approaches, to identify and address local needs, systematically including local engagement, capacity building and leadership development programs.
Operating in 6 communities throughout Western Sydney, FUn develops programs in partnership with schools and community groups, aimed at addressing 2 fundamental issues: 1. Providing easily accessible and free sport and recreation services. People involved with FUn previously had little or no access to regular organised sport due to family situations, the relatively high cost and limited access to transportation. This hindered their ability to operate in one of largest social infrastructures in ‘mainstream’ Australian society. 2. Enabling children, youths and their families from all regions of the World to play and work together using the one thing most have in common, Football, as a means of breaking down racial, social and cultural barriers.
