In most African countries, the power of football is visible day in day out. Kids know their role models thoroughly and can mention the city and players of each premier league club in England. Via football they learn. Because they love it. In that very same village where children watch Chelsea – Liverpool, there are water problems. Problems with the infrastructure that does not bring in clean drinking water, but also with knowledge. Children have to fetch water, but don’t know how to recognize clean water, and they don’t always know that they have to wash their hands and food or have no means to do so. Safe menstrual hygiene practices are a challenge too. These issues and the learning ground of football offer unique opportunities to make a difference in children’s lives.
Seven Dutch organizations have partnered up to make this difference. They combine football and water. Two strong Dutch ‘products’. Water and sanitation facilities are installed at primary schools, and football coaches educate the children about the use of the facilities, hygiene behavior and other life skills. Day in, day out.
