More about Football for the Empowerment of Girls and the Elimination of Girl Child Labour in Kilifi County
Moving the Goalposts (MTG) uses, since 2001,football to empower girls in rural committees in Coastal Kenya and to tackle issues such as teenage pregnancies, early marriages and school drop out. Our work with girls at the grassroots and the shift of our focus to a more human rights based approach made us realize that the problem of child labour and the commercial sexual exploitation of girls needed to be addressed. In MTG, girls come together to play football, act as or become leaders and to discuss issues about sexual reproductive health and human rights.
The “Eliminating Child labour through Football Project” uses the existing MTG structure: football leagues and peer education sessions, to reach out to girls (between 5 – 17 years) who are in child labour/at risk of being engaged in child labour and/or commercial sexual exploitation. The project has combined the power and structures of football with interventions as psychological support, support with schoolfees and materials, trainings of child right clubs, vocational training, business support and training of parents in savings groups with group businesses and community awareness activities.
