More about Football for Social Change
Women and girls face doubled discrimination with the region cut off from mainstream Kenya. In Marsabit gender discrimination is widely tolerated. The main issues are harmful practices, boys celebrated at birth, women face domestic violence, once raped or defiled then the girls is given to the perpetrator for free. No space for women under the elder’s tree which is a preserve of the elders denying women equal positions in decision making. Lack of investment in girl’s education it is seen as waste of resources while also girls are sold off for the cows.
Football for Social Change to champion Gender Equality and Reduce Inequalities by engaging 3 boys and 3 girls in a team. We made this HODI’s focus because in the beginning it was a huge challenge to even get the girls to play football. Now we started using football to tackle inequalities, it was imminent that boy’s girls/boys together with men/women had to be involved. It was not possible to talk about gender equality and just work with girls alone we needed the boys/girls in this fight. Using the village structure and mapping all the schools and girls/boys ensured all the children are accounted for and none was discriminated against
