More about Football and Cutting-edge HIV Research
By using the power of football, VAP trains local role models as community change agents. Through football themed manuals that carry HIV messages, these trained “Coaches” educate youth from their very own neighborhoods, and inspire them to avoid risks and lead productive and healthy lives. VAP periodically conducts community Kick N Test VCT football tournaments in the slums of Nairobi in which football players, fans and community members receive extra OFF the field points by testing for HIV despite the normal ON field scores. At the same time, VAP creates awareness and distributes HIV oral self-testing kits through home to home visits and at the Kick N Test community football tournaments. HIV Oral self-testing kits approved by WHO and the Kenyan government through the ministry of health is one innovation that may help break down barriers to HIV testing. In addition, innovative strategies may make it easier for HIV+ individuals to stay on care. Community-supported models of care for HIV positive people in Sub-Saharan Africa, including social support groups of HIV+ individuals who can take turns visiting the clinic and obtaining ARV medications for the group.
