More about Football among the Tribes
Uni Papua's Football among the Tribes project targets underprivileged children in rural communities in Indonesia, especially in the provinces of Papua and West Papua. They are faced with lack of opportunities, low level of education, unemployment, prevalence of HIV.
Although they are not offered many activities, there is one thing they all enjoy immensely - playing football. We believe it is a way that might offer them a way out of a life of disappointment, insecurity and hopelessness.
We are not offering them an instant solution. Rather than that, we try to encourage them to take hold of their life, and make them understand they are responsible for their future. We are teaching them many things, but in an informal environment.
We focus on skills that they should have learned at home, but due to circumstances they are not responsible for, they have not. We help them develop self-confidence, respect for others, and explain to them the importance of communication.
We believe that if we provide them with enough skills and mental tools, they may follow paths they never before imagined.
