More about Family Learning through Football
Family Learning though Football uses football based activities to develop skills in parents and their children. The programme is delivered in primary and secondary schools in the region over 10, two hour sessions. Football allows us to engage parents who may not otherwise take an interest in participating in such a programme and has been highly successful in engaging families in sporting activity and building relationships between parents, their children and their children’s schools. Throughout the course families are educated about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle including the basics of what constitutes a healthy lifestyle, how to eat healthily and making healthy food choices.
Families which may have never exercised together are introduced to different types of exercise and encouraged to participate in simple games and activities, eventually running their own activities. Sports based coaching techniques which they learn on the programme help many parents communicate better with their children and help build more positive relationships within the families. The programme also allows us to signpost parents onto other courses and progressions pathways helping them improve their numeracy, literacy and job seeking skills amongst others. Many families also report an increase in their confidence after the course.
