More about Extra Time Programme

The Extra Time two year pilot programme delivers a social inclusion and physical activity programme using the ‘power of football’ to engage with older people age 60 plus. Currently, 20 football club community schemes deliver a varied physical activity and social inclusion programme, within the community, for at least 30 weeks of the year.

The club community schemes effectively use their strong reputation with the local community and their partners to engage with participants. ‘In an aging population the prevention of ill health and promotion of wellbeing and independence are fundamental issues’ “Our Health, Our Care, Our Say” HM Government White Paper The programme aims to increase participants’ uptake of regular physical activity. This helps to tackle important health issues such as;

• Obesity , stroke, cardiovascular diseases and smoking.

• Lack of mobility.

• Prevention of falls.

• Mental health issues such as depression.

The programme also aims to reduce social isolation and increase feelings of social integration and belonging to the community. The programme also raises awareness of health risks and focuses on lifestyle changes that promote health and well being, helping older people to stay healthy and well and empowering them to live independent lives.
