More about European Healthy Stadia Network
Sport and sports stadia play a vital role within communities. Millions of people in Europe attend a sports stadium each week, to watch their team, to work or to use the stadium’s facilities. Stadia offer important opportunities for reaching large numbers of people, improving public health and reducing health inequalities. The Healthy Stadia Network supports the exchange of good practice and integrated approaches to improving the health of those who work and visit sports stadia and those who live in the areas surrounding stadia.
Traditionally, sports stadia are located in less affluent areas of cities with poorer health, higher inequalities of health and vulnerable social groups such as the young and middle aged male population which are traditionally difficult groups to access on health issues. Sports stadia are thus in an excellent position to develop community health initiatives addressing health determinants such as food and nutrition, physical activity, tobacco, sexual health, alcohol and substance misuse and mental health.
The Healthy Stadia Network has developed a robust ‘toolkit’, guidance documents and support mechanisms to help many European sports stadia develop strong partnerships with local health agencies, in turn, building public health into the CSR agenda for many sports stadia across Europe.
