More about Erie Judo
Chicago’s Humboldt Park community, where EECS is located and many of our students live, faces obstacles posed by poverty, neighborhood violence, poor health, low educational attainment and a low level of English literacy, which all present enormous challenges to student achievement. Research suggests that the proliferation and cyclical nature of these social issues is related to a sense of disenfranchisement and a lack of self-esteem, particularly as it relates to youth. The EECS Judo program provides a much-needed safe and supportive after school alternative for children in our community, while also working to combat these issues.
The benefits of participating in Judo are many: students learn important anger management techniques, are given a positive outlet for aggression and learn the principles of non-violence; Judo nurtures a positive self-concept, promotes exercise and healthy habits, and increases flexibility, coordination and stamina; students also develop increased self-direction, personal responsibility and a greater ability to focus. Students inhabiting theses these qualities are much less likely to engage in negative behaviors. For many at-risk students, participation in extracurricular activities provides the motivation to come to school, stay in school and excel.
