More about Empowering disabled peoples in rural Uganda through sports

Sports involving people with disabilities are the best method for breaking down barriers between people with and without disabilities. Observers are drawn into the competitions they watch and often end up taking part, relating in a way they have not done before with the disabled sportspeople. The aim of this project is to actively assist the creation of sporting activities across the country. Through public sensitization.

There is currently very little sporting activity for persons with disabilities in Uganda; we focus on inclusive sport as a tool for advocating disabilities issues to be mainstreamed into development programs. The organization involve 12 districts of Uganda to develop and support disabled teams during the knock out competitions will occur in at least wheelchair basketball, tennis and deaf football at national events in May 2009, and 2010.

Transport for the players and small prizes are provided. sports Facilities are improved in each of the regions in order to make them accessible for wheelchairs, and a small fund has been included in the budget for this purpose, for instance to build access ramps. The ministry of Education and Sports has expressed willingness to open the network of ‘mini-stadium’ currently under development across the regions in the country so that they can be used by the project for training and competitions.

It is likely that wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis and football for deaf teams will be the key initial activities, as these have already started to gain some popularity but are unlikely to extend further inland without support. The project work alongside an International Tennis Federation (ITF) activity to promote wheelchair tennis in Uganda. This project support s the trainer’s visits to set up districts teams for a national competition. A key constraint here is that there are not enough sports wheelchairs in the country to enable the development of a number of district teams.
