More about Educating for Peace through sport/Football

Rwanda has an historical background marked by genocide committed against Tutsis, wars and other multifaceted violence. Emotional Wounds are deep-rooted and necessitate in-depth actions order to dig out the underlying causes and to bring about appropriate solutions. In Rwanda, despite a tremendous action conducted by the Government, the Parliament has decried the ideology of genocide, and ethnic hatred, which still lingers in the heart of many Rwandans.

The countries present a pressing need to heal emotional wound for their population and educate them for peace in order to ensure a better future. SEP realizes that sports could be a powerful and effective tool for responding to the need and affirm a different future with people committed to peaceful resolution of conflicts. The game of football is very popular with young people, especially in the Great Lakes region.

It offers an atmosphere of tension similar to that of an armed conflict in terms of pitting people against each other, which creates the ideal setting for experiential learning in the area of peace education. If young people can learn to resolve conflict peacefully on the sports field they will be able to apply these same principles in their daily lives.
