More about Doc Wayne Athletic League-Metro West Girls Division
Physical activity and a supportive environment are essential in trauma recovery. Our program and its’ delivery has been intentionally designed to align with the most current research and best practices on brain science and trauma recovery. The “DtG” curriculum is designed to help participants get “…to a place on and off the field where they feel effective, and have arrived there without doing any harm to anyone else”.
The design facilitates skills through four sports-themed therapeutic goals: “play to the whistle” (perseverance), “show up” (commit to one’s best possible performance), “build your team” (relationship-building skills and responsibility-taking), and “fill the tank” (provide support for one another). Our target population is a segment of adolescent girls, who due to severe trauma are unable to function at home and school safely. They are placed in residential programs; removed from the normalcy of adolescence, which often amplifies the feelings of isolation and can become an additional barrier to recovery. For these young women sport has proven to be a catalyst for change and growth on their path to recovery and re-integration.
