More about Disability Sports Appeal
Disabled youngsters face many obstacles to participate in sport and there is a shortfall of funding at grass roots level. When London was announced as the next Paralympic Games host, The Lord’s Taverners, having been involved in the disability sport sector for many years, wanted to provide a lasting legacy for wheelchair sport in the UK. The DSA is making a real impact on developing young people under the age of 19 by increasing the opportunity to participate in organized, competitive, national sporting activities. We have clear evidence that our programmes are effective and make a big difference to the lives of wheelchair users and their families.
Disability sport (particularly wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis) encourages family and social integration as able-bodied youngsters can play alongside young people with disabilities. Now at the half-way stage in our five-year appeal, we have already raised over £500,000 for wheelchair sport and reached out to over 1,000 wheelchair users and their families since 2007. We are on target to surpass our original targets and impact on the lives of even more disabled young people.
