More about Diamonds Programme - Yonwabani Social Sports
Empowerment of youth in schools across various fields is crucial towards the break of the psychological poverty cycle in townships of South Africa. Sport is one of the tools in which this can be achieved.
Available research on Khayelitsha uncovers that the average income in this township is approximately R1200.00 (USD$145 or NZD$182) per household, per month to support an average of four dependants. This figure conditions the environment in this community as the shortage of finances, lead to none-existent sports programmes and norm of stagnant culture of inactivity.
Since the poor access to sports facilities inside schools, the majority of township youth and children, like in Khayelitsha, are further subject to exposure of substance abuse and very little physical activity programmes, especially in afterschool hours and weekends. As such, sitting in shebeen and loitering are the only forms of leisure, thus creating a popular perception of typical South African norms and lifestyle.
This proposal presents organised social sports programmes for children and adults, adequately equipped to encourage and normalise sports activity as a fun and healthier alternative of leisure in towns
