More about Diamonds in the Rough
Many people around the world believe that baseball is a man’s sport, and softball is the women’s equivalent. In Indonesia girls are pushed to play softball and banned from baseball after the age of 12. These imposed restrictions mimic the traditional norms of girls and women in Indonesia with many of their choices and opportunities limited by what society dictates.
Diamonds in the Rough (DITR) uses the non-traditional female sport of baseball to create a societal mind-set shift and open people’s hearts and minds to new possibilities about what girls can and cannot do. We show Indonesian girls that just as they can make their own choices about the sport they want to play, they can make their own choices about their futures.
