More about Creating a Safe Play Space for children in Nahr el-Bared Refugee Camp
RTP believes that sport and play offer an unparalleled means through which trust can be built between groups in conflict and cultures of peace can be established and maintained. The ultimate goal of RTP programming in Nahr el-Bared is to foster long-term behaviour change and the acquisition of key leadership, communication and learning skills for children and young people affected by rights abuses, sectarian recruitment and violence.
Local coaches and teachers in Nahr el-Bared are trained to harness the best values of sport - respect, leadership, inclusion, teamwork, self-esteem and fair play – to foster peace and social cohesion in the longer term. Programmes have been developed by experts in child psychology, education, conflict-resolution coaching and sport-based learning.
They focus on creating supportive environments where structured programming can be delivered with the help of local partners and schools. Programmes used in Nahr el-Bared include Red Ball Child Play, Early Child Play, Youth as Leader and Sport-Specific Programming. They use RTP’s Reflect, Connect, Apply Methodology to enable children to reflect on activities undertaken; connect them to challenges and opportunities in everyday life and apply learning to future scenarios. This fuels behaviour change and peaceful co-existence in the longer term.
