Hockey as a sport in Malawi has clocked 37 years to date and it has become one of the popular sport hence fast spreading into rural communities. Community Reintegration (CORE) - A Hockey Approach To Combating Social Exclusion project capitalized from this fact and uses hockey as a platform for systematically withdrawing excluded young people involved in prostitution, drug and alcohol abuse hence those convicted before with various crimes and are perceived as outcasts within their communities.
The project uses hockey as a primary tool and strategy for community reintegration hence drive positive social transformation among the excluded youths and the targeted communities through provision of leadership and entrepreneurship skills for community social impact, advocacy on social inclusion hence develop stronger and self-sustaining partnerships for maximum project impact.
The project is also effectively using hockey as a tool for cultivating behaviour change through motivational talks and counseling and group therapy that happens within the established community hockey clubs. The project is also using the sport as a platform for unearthing hidden potential hence providing vocational skills as another formidable social inclusion strategy into the community social cycle.
