More about Common-wealth Games Association of Canada (CGC)
Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC)’s International Development through Sport (IDS) program is a grassroots sport program that uses the transformative power of sport to change lives and strengthen communities throughout the Commonwealth.
IDS supports 18 grassroots sport programs in 26 Commonwealth countries, reaching over 250,000 youth in 2011. IDS program includes HIV/AIDS education, stay-in-school initiatives and life skills building activities.
Program examples include:
- Bowling Out AIDS program – a cricket based development through sport program designed for Caribbean youth 9-19 years to both increase cricket skills, and reduce the incidence and transmission of HIV infections.
- Go Sisters in Zambia provides a sport-focused platform for girls to share their experiences and challenges, discover their talents, and learn important life skills.
- Capacity Support Program which sends young Canadian interns to assist Commonwealth Games Associations with sport administration activities ranging from sport programs and fundraising to development of grassroots sport programs.
CGC believes that the development of sport in a given country or context is integral to making development through sport programs work, reason why we continuously look at leveraging the power of organized sport to advance social development programs.
