More about Colorful Girls’ Volleyball Circles
After 50 years of military rule and economic isolation, Myanmar is experiencing unbridled economic, social and political changes. Such changes have the most detrimental impact on marginalized groups, namely girls and women, exacerbating gender inequity. For girls in Myanmar, serious discrimination begins in early adolescence as girls’ life choices are curtailed — undermined by gender role norms which prescribe a girl’s needs to be at the behest of the economic demands of the family. Girls often face various forms of exploitation and abuse in order to meet this social expectation, which leads to lost potential and often life-long physical, mental and psychological harm.
Girl Determined works to support adolescent girls in overcoming intersecting obstacles towards personal empowerment and increasing status at the community and national levels. Our programs directly address ethnic and religious discrimination, restrictive gender norms, school drop-out, gender-based violence, and risky labor and migration. Girl Determined’s girl-focused discussions and sports activities are led by a team of all-female, trained staff to help girls find their voices and determine their own futures.
