More about Chicago Run- Running Mates
Given the severe lack of sports-based youth development programs in low-income communities, "Running Mates" provides a safe, productive, and healthy environment for exercise. Research has demonstrated that youth with risk factors in their lives are more likely to engage in drugs and alcohol use, violence, and gang activity.
However, organized sports or athletic programs have been proven to minimize feelings of difference and isolation, help to increase academic performance and test scores, and contribute to the development of children's peer networks. Because RM does not distinguish itself as a track team and welcomes runners of all levels, the youth do not feel intimidated to participate.
Most participants were previously not involved in after-school programs and normally led sedentary lifestyles with unhealthy eating habits- both contributors to the epidemic of childhood obesity. Through RM children of all fitness levels have an opportunity to participate in a program that increases their physical activity, nutritional knowledge, and self-esteem in a safe and positive atmosphere.
