More about Chicago Cool Kids: Ice Sport Outreach
Ice sports lack diversity. In a city that now holds the Stanley Cup, the majority of urban youth will never be able to take part in a recreational skating class because of the location of the ice facilities. Suburban families have access to all four ice sports when there are year round rinks in their communities. Families in urban areas miss out on all of the benefits that these sports provide when their communities are void of these facilities. For example, two of the three curling facilities within the Chicago area are located at private country clubs, making this sport even more exclusive and inaccessible. Our mission includes progressive projects that help to encourage inclusion and increase diversity within all of these sports by addressing the three main barriers: cost, location and accessibility.
We aren’t just interested in giving individuals a chance to participate in these sports one time; we are invested in finding ways for these individuals to continue to pursue ice sports both recreationally and competitively. IceReach is a pioneer within the ice sports field; there are currently no other outreach organizations addressing these issues and there is no other program that focuses on all four ice sports.
