More about Champions for Peace (C4P)
Despite a formal peace agreement between the Protestant and Catholic traditions in 1998, in 2014/2015 the Police Service of Northern Ireland recorded 1,517 sectarian crimes, which represents an increase of 18.1% from the prior year. Research conducted by the Institute for Conflict Research has identified 99 security barriers separating Catholic and Protestant areas in Northern Ireland and 90% of public housing in Northern Ireland is segregated along sectarian lines. In addition only 7% of pupils in Northern Ireland attend integrated schools. As a result, young people from these historically divided parts of our community have very few opportunities to interact.
PPI-NI’s innovative Champions for Peace project incorporates proven conflict transformation techniques within the context of team sport and productive dialogue. Coordinated interventions at key life stages allow for the development of young leaders who are better equipped to address the main challenges that Northern Ireland continues to face, flags and emblems, parades and dealing with the past.
